Rapidvite Peter Mosman Final
Bates Wenty Dominance Continues
26 June 2011
The stranglehold Graeme Bate seems to hold over group races at Wentworth Park continued on Saturday night, with emerging youngster Allen Harper a dominant victor of the Group 1 Rapidvite Peter Mosman Classic.
Stepping out for just his tenth race start, Allen Harper ($4.70) made full use of his box one draw to drive underneath pace-setter Adam Meway heading through the catching pen, careering away for an empathic 5 ¼ length victory in a sizzling 29.58s.
In an eventful finale to the three week series, Eric Castle’s Main Drag ($9.70) finished strongly to grab second, whilst the ever consistent Ruby’s Lair ($29.10) finished third for trainer Tracey Bryant at big odds.
It was a big night out for Bryant, also scooping the last winner on the program, with Rookie Blue successful in the final few strides.
The victory of Allen Harper continued what’s been an amazing 2011 for master Victorian trainer Graeme Bate, who has already landed victorious Sydney campaigns this year with Radley Bale (Group 1 Golden Easter Egg) and Tonneli Bale (Group 2 Ladies Bracelet).
A son of Over Flo and Kazar Bale, Allen Harper made it win number eight on Saturday evening, with the victory stamping himself as a leading prospect in the upcoming Group 1 Maturity at The Meadows.
Topping off the night nicely, the Bate/Wheeler combination had another winner on the program, with Martili Bale taking out the fifth event, albeit narrowly, in front of Thing’s Missing.
The attention of the age restricted circuit now turns to The Meadows, with the Group 1 Maturity kicking off in a few weeks time.
First run in 1952 as the Bi Annual Classic, the series was re-named in honour of former GBOTA Chairman Peter Mosman in 1988.
After the placings the field finished in the following order 4th Matilda’s Charm ($15.00), 5th Dana Travis ($36.40), 6th Adam Meway ($7.10) 7th Kilty Lad ($3.30) and Loathsome ($3.40).
Allen Harper is a Black dog whelped May ’09 by Over Flo from Kazar Bale (Go Wild Teddy x Siandra Bale). He raced by Janice Wheeler and trained by Graeme Bate and the Group 1 Mosman Memorial Classic was Allen Harper’s eight win with two placings from 10 starts. The $50,000 first prize took his stake earnings to $62,525.
The Classic was first run at Harold Park in 1952 when won by Robin Buchanan. In those days the race was called the Bi-Annual Classic and remained the same until 1988 when the GBOTA renamed the Classic honouring legendary administrator the late Peter Mosman. Like all other GBOTA features it moved with the club to Wentworth Park in 1987. Some outstanding sprinters have won the race over its journey going back to Miss Oakey (53), Tell You Why (59), Classy Jane (the dam of Black Top 60), Rokoko (68), The Smoother (70), Satan’s Legend (78), Tegimi (79), Promises Free (82), Brother Fox (85), Farmer Wilson (91), How’s The Fort (92), Worthy Reward (93), Tap Dance (94), Solve The Puzzle (98), Great Wish (99), Winsome Dollars (2001), Elite State (2003), Surf Lorian (2004) and last year’s winner Tuiaki.
